The King, 2014
Polyester and Fabrics, AW Size: 40cm x 40cm
When questioning the history and possible future of Egypt during a time of famine, El Meleegy instinctively came up with a solution: The bean plant.
Egyptians have always been dependent on this humble, edible legume as a substitute protein source, and its price has remained affordable and stable through the ages. Standing at a street cart and enjoying a plate of beans is a pastime that all Egyptians can relate to, making this small pulse a catalyst for communal gatherings.
The bean can therefore be considered The King. It has been loved and respected by the rich, appreciated by the poor, and supported by the entire Egyptian population.
After thousands of years, The King has now returned to rule. Reem Hatem
